Overview Malaria and Development

Figure 1 below shows the distribution of malaria in South Africa in 1938 before there was any effort to control the disease in this country. Malaria was most severe along the coast of northern KwaZulu-Natal, in the hot and humid Lowveld flood plains. The severity dropped off at higher altitudes, with the Highveld being virtually free of the disease.

Figure 2 below shows the distribution of malaria in South Africa between 1997 and 1998. It is clearly evident that high malaria risk areas are associated with corridors or proximity to Mozambique, also that the Kruger National Park acts as a malaria buffer between Mozambique and South Africa.
