Evaluation of Insecticides and repellents
Comparative evaluation of insecticides for malaria vector control
Synthetic pyrethroids have replaced DDT as the insecticide used for the spraying of interiors of houses for malaria vector control. A number of distinct molecular variants exist among the synthetic pyrethroids and they can be formulated in a number of different ways. This project includes both field and laboratory evaluations of the long-term effectiveness of various synthetic pyrethroids in different formulations on an array of surfaces/substrates, including bednets.
In addition, larviciding as a control measure is once again receiving attention. This is a result of new strategies currently being evaluated and also the availability of more effective chemicals and formulations. The outcome of such trials provide valuable information to the malaria control programmes of southern Africa, enabling them to make policy decisions on locally gathered evidence.
