Distribution and Severity of Malaria in South Africa, 1938

This map shows the distribution of malaria in South Africa before efforts to control the disease were implemented. Malaria was most severe along the coast of northern KwaZulu-Natal Province, in the hot and humid Lowveld coastal flood-plains. The severity decreased at higher altitudes, with the inland Highveld region being virtually free of the disease.
