Bioko Island Malaria Control Project (BIMCP)

In 2004, the BIMCP initiated a comprehensive malaria control intervention to drastically reduce the incidence of malaria on the island. It is funded by Marathon Oil Company in partnership with the government of Equatorial Guinea, Medical Care Development International, One World Development Group, MRC and Harvard University. It consists of vector control through indoor residual spraying (IRS) of all domicillary structures on the island and an extensive programme of case management by provision of definitive diagnosis, treatment with Artemisinin based combination therapy and intermittent preventive treatment to pregnant women. MRC had the role of vector advisor and is responsible for the monitoring and evaluation of the project.
