A Spatial Decision support System for the Lubombo SDI
The project aims to develop and implement:
- a GIS-based Decision Support System (DSS) for the Lubombo
Spatial Development Initiative (LSDI). The DSS will consist of a Malaria
Information System (MIS), a GIS data repository, and a web-based spatial
query and analysis tool for information dissemination;
- statistical malaria prediction models for the region to be used as health
management tools.
The project has the following objectives:
- The project will result in the development of an innovative GIS and MIS
to support a malaria control programme in southern Mozambique. A national,
standardised database of malaria across the region will allow comparisons
to be made and changes to be tracked as control measures improve.
- The creation of a GIS data repository for the LSDI region will ensure
that all components of the initiative have access to the most up-to-date
spatial data sets at a centralised point.
- The availability and efficient use of multi-sectoral GIS databases will
support broader decision-making and planning regarding development within
the LSDI.
- A web-based GIS application will be developed allowing anyone with internet
access to analyse and map spatial and statistical data available in the
GIS data repository and the MIS. See www.LubomboMapping.org.za
- GIS and database skills within the region will be enhanced, building local
capacity.
- The effects of malaria control and its impacts on tourism will be assessed.
Maps reflecting disease distribution, essential to inform tourists of the
high and low risk-areas and changes over time, will be made available via
the web-based GIS application, and in hard copy.
- Statistical malaria epidemic prediction models will be developed that
will enable health services to better control the disease through epidemic
preparedness.
